BTAN is Seeking Nominees for Paid Creatives In Residence (CIRs)!

Nominate a Black-Africana member of the Allegheny County arts community to serve as a Creative in Residence with the Black Transformative Arts Network! Nominate yourself or a creative educator you know!

What Does It Mean to be a CIR?

    • You will be a creative educator, coach, mentor, a host, a connector/facilitator all while developing your craft and sense of purpose. 

    • You will be a culture bearer, shifter, and change agent, harnessing  the transformative power of art to shape narrative and build the field with a culture of liberation.

About us:

The Black Transformative Arts Network is a collaborative community of artists, educators, and culture workers who focus on supporting and connecting Black-Africana youth artists, teaching artists, and educators to build a transformative, creative community for Black-Africana children. With a commitment to energizing school classrooms as sites of creative enrichment, we seek experienced and confident teaching artists to take up the title Creative in Residence.

About the Opportunity:

This ten month journey will engage emerging and seasoned teaching artists in a hybrid school and community based residency, a professional learning community, creative learning experiences, network development, visibility-raising opportunities, and ongoing mentorship culminating in the third annual Creative Black Futures Youth Art Exhibition and Showcase.

From January to September, Creatives in Residence will be immersed in Residency experiences that will inform their professional practice, engage in Praxis (BTAN professional development and learning series), develop their own portfolio, and engage in profile and visibility raising opportunities with the Network.

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience working with youth in school and community settings, be reliable and consistent, exhibit a body of work that can be shared with students and community members, and must be able to commit to monthly and quarterly engagements, in addition to residency commitments.

 

Highlights of this Opportunity Include:

 Recipients will receive a stipend of $8000 and additional paid opportunities totaling more than $10,000.

Who is eligible: Black & Africana Artists 22 and older with 5 or more years of demonstrated creative practice. All disciplines are welcome to apply with special interest in visual arts, vocal arts, ceramics and crafts, theater and dance.

CIR Criteria:

  • A practicing artist of 5 or more years of experience; must have demonstrated skill  facilitating group learning and discussion
  • Must be able to provide a resume and CV
  • Must be able to articulate efforts towards career advancement, skill building, or professional development opportunities
  • Must be able to pass act 33/34 clearances.
  • Must fit into the the required disciplines 
  • Must be able to commit to daytime residency in school as well as weekend activity
  • Demonstrate a seriousness and commitment to practicing AND teaching your craft.  

Who and What We’re Seeking

    • Visual art, maker, print and craft (including sculpture, wood and metal work, clothing design and  

    • Multimedia (photo, video, sound engineering and production) 

    • Performing Art (theater, spoken word poetry, music/vocal)

    • Movement art (dance, interplay, step) 

    • Literary art and narrative
